It’s just like in copywriting, and I had to make a huge mind shift some time ago. My first thought was “Hang on a tick, wouldn’t that narrow my pool of potential clients? I want to work with everyone! And if do niche, where do I even start?!”

Fortunately, Tamsin Henderson’s Super Niche Challenge for copywriters came to my rescue 😅! Thanks Tam!

Exploring the Pros and Cons of Niching

➕ Pros of Niching:

Niching allows you to become an expert in a particular area of health and wellness. This can make you more trustworthy and bring in more clients who need specialized help. It’ll sharpen your skills in that particular niche too.

Imagine this situation: If you have a serious heart problem and need surgery, would you go to your general doctor or pick a heart specialist instead? Mmm, I thought so 🙃.

Focusing on a niche lets you customize your services, marketing, and messages to match your audience’s needs. Your marketing becomes much more effective and increases your conversion rate.

You’ll always have a gold mine of ideas for your content too.

Also, specializing can set you apart from competitors and establish you as an authority in your field.

The best of all? The more specialized your services, the less the competition!

❌ Cons of Niching:

While niching offers many advantages, it’s essential to consider the potential drawbacks as well.

One challenge of niching is the risk of limiting your potential clientele. Especially if your niche is highly specialized or has a smaller target market.

Additionally, narrowing your focus too much can make it difficult to pivot or expand your offerings in the future. However, you can overcome these challenges with careful planning and strategic decision-making.

3 Strategies for Finding and Choosing an Ideal Niche

Let’s look at some useful ways to find and pick the perfect niche for your health and wellness business.

1️⃣ Finding Your Passion and Expertise:

Consider these questions…

  • What makes YOU special?
  • What sets you apart from all the other health coaches?
  • What are your personality traits?
  • Which health topics do you find super interesting?
  • Where do you have the most experience or knowledge?
  • What type of health coaching service do you want to specialise in?
  • What energizes you and what drains your energy?
  • What are your weak points?
  • Which health topics do you find the least interesting?

Now, make a list of your top 3 traits and top 3 interests. Then do the same with your weak points and least interesting health subjects.

Take your answers from above and start reflecting on your passions, interests, and areas of expertise within the health and wellness industry

Remember, clarity is KEY here!

Your niche should align with your personal interests and strengths for a sustainable and successful business.

You see…

When your passions, personality, preferences, and strengths are all aligned, the wheels of your business will run smoothly!

And as the saying goes… if you LOVE what you do, you won’t work a day in your life, right?

2️⃣ Researching Market Demand:

Once you’ve identified the topics you’re passionate about and know well, it’s important to see if these niches have a big enough demand and potential for growth.

Look for niches where there’s a clear target audience who need your help and are willing to pay for it.

3️⃣ Aligning Personal Interests with Market Opportunities:

Finally, choose a niche that not only aligns with your passions and expertise but also offers significant market opportunities.

Consider factors such as the size of the target market, competition levels, and potential for expansion or specialization within the niche.

By aligning personal interests with market opportunities, you can maximize your chances of success as a health coach.

Lastly, pick a niche that matches what you love and know well, and also has a big chance to do well in the market.

Think about things like how many people might be interested, how many other coaches are doing the same thing, and if there’s room to grow or specialize.

When you match what you like with what people want, you have a better chance of doing great as a health coach.

Your Ideal Coaching Client

1️⃣ Who is your ideal client?

Great, now, you have an understanding of yourself, the market demand, and how to align them.

But knowing WHO you’d like to work with is just as important. AND aligning that to your personality, of course.

To define your target audience, search relevant keywords on Google to see what clients are looking for.

Consider the following about their demographics and psychographics:

  • Their age
  • Income bracket
  • Type of job
  • Where they live
  • Interests
  • Values
  • Stage of life
  • Family dynamics
  • Attitudes

Okay, take it further by understanding your ideal client and their situation. What are they struggling with, what keeps them up at night, and what is their burning desire right now?

Then, think of how you can help your ideal client with these wants, needs and problems.

2️⃣ What do clients want?

WIFFM!

(Stay with me, there’s a method in my madness)

This is one thing you’ll ALWAYS want to keep in mind. Not only while picking a niche, but even more so in your marketing and content creation.

The #1 question on your client’s mind is “What’s In It For Me?” Always. Sounds a little selfish, right? But we’re all like that if you think about it.

People don’t search online for a health (or weight loss/fitness/nutrition) coach just to find a health coach.

They have a SPECIFIC problem, a pain point…or a burning desire:

  • to finally knock the last two notches off their belt
  • break free from the smothering stress trap
  • not feel bloated all the time; train for an ultra marathon
  • improve heart health with healthier habits
  • shake the sugar or other addictions
  • get rid of a phobia…

And they’re looking for answers… for solutions!

They’re looking for an expert who is equipped and able to help them. Period.
